Iceland's Meltdown

by Resti H. Santiago

With the influence of Pluto in the Galactic Center still strong and the upcoming Saturn opposite Uranus getting stronger, stability in the financial world would remain a difficult task, though off course a dead cat bounce can be expected. However, the situation may even become more unstable when the clashing energies of Saturn and Uranus become more intense. Surprises to the downside cannot be discounted. This planetary opposition is still to take place on November 5 but its energy is being felt now. Unfortunately, this interaction between Saturn and Uranus will occur five times up to 2010. As I stated in Astro-time 2008, the coming years are not going to be prosperous ones.

Iceland’s Banking Collapse

Early this month, Iceland became the first country to go bankrupt as a result of the global credit squeeze, the collapse of Lehman Brothers and CDOs. Iceland’s banking system is currently in a state of collapse. The Central Bank have slashed its interest rates by 3% already and the government has taken over three of the nation’s largest lenders. The economic fallout is to be felt sooner not later.

Studying the astrology behind Iceland’s fall is surely one for the books- the astrological factors are easily discernable. This would also be another opportunity for non-astrologers to appreciate the beauty behind astrological theory. By looking at numbers (zodiacal degrees) and signs one can easily see connections between the planets, the degrees and what they symbolize.

The planet’s current positions:

Pluto is now at 28 degrees and 51 minutes in the sign of Sagittarius
Pluto is a planet whose influence includes issues about death and debt.

The Galactic Center is at 26 degrees and 59 minutes Sagittarius
As stated previously, there is a massive black hole at the Galactic Center. A black hole is something that sucks everything, it is so powerful not even light can escape it. In a way the GC can somehow be connected with the concept of karma- nature’s law of cause and effect. Raymond Merriman interpreted the whole period from the late 80’s till now as a period of credit expansion. Pluto rules credit while Sagittarius is the sign of globalization and expansion. But at the end of Pluto’s transit into Sagittarius is this GC effect, we have to reaped what has been sowed during several decades of credit expansion.

Uranus is at 19 degrees and 20 minutes Pisces
Uranus is the planet of disruption, sharp movement in price and major or even unexpected changes.

Pluto and GC alignment:

Pluto and the GC are astrologically aligned in what astrologers calls the conjunction. When Pluto is aligned with the GC, which actually started last year around the beginning of the sub-prime related meltdown, the negative influences of this planet are magnified. What made this combination extremely powerful is that their energies are somehow similar- both are connected with matters of death. The most powerful Pluto-GC energy was further activated when Pluto turned direct on September 8. With Pakistan, Ukraine now also needing financial help - it seems that this energy is far from being exhausted.

From Iceland national chart, these are the very important planetary positions:
Ascendant is 2 degrees Libra
Sun at 26 degrees and 13 minutes Gemini
Saturn at 29 degrees and 30 minutes Gemini
Venus 23 degrees and 36 minutes

Planetary Dynamics

What is astrologically significant is how the current planetary positions relate to the planets found in the chart of Iceland. The geometric alignment of these planets would reveal the energy dynamics that led to its current financial turmoil.

The Sagittarius Pluto/GC is aligned negatively with Iceland’s Gemini Planets. The Pluto/GC conjunction is opposing the Sun and Saturn. Planets in opposition brings problems and in the case of Iceland, Sun and Saturn are the planets of leadership. The authorities in Iceland failed to control the financial meltdown. The financial trouble itself is revealed by Uranus squaring (90degrees) away from Venus. The result is sharp interest rates cut and eventually substantial devaluation of krona, Iceland’s currency.

Don't forget Saturn's entry into the 12th house (Placidus) around the time of the meltdown. What is happening now in Iceland is very much Saturn in the 12th.
